Several Carroll County Schools were represented in this contest and three winners were selected from the Carroll County School System. Scott Wright, an eleventh grade student at Mount Zion High School, was chosen as the first place winner in the poetry category for his entry entitled “Smokey Mountains.” Scott received three hundred dollars as his winning prize. Third place in the poetry category was won by Mount Zion High School sophomore Sara Zelaya for her entry entitled “Where I Am From.” She received a one hundred dollar award for this honor. Second place in the short story category was received by Georgia Shoemake, an eleventh grade student at Central High School. Her entry was entitled “Gate Crashers” and she received two hundred dollars as her prize. Also attending this ceremony was guest speaker Sheri King who encouraged the students to use “vivid imagery as a way to invite people into our words.” She also inspired the participants to “create [their] own voice” and to “touch someone else by [their] words.” Congratulations to these students for this outstanding accomplishment!
