Nancy Chapman Monroe is a native of Oneonta, Alabama,  and a graduate of Appalachian High School—a small rural school atop Straight Mountain, where she grew up.   “I think one reason I love Mt. Zion so much,” Nancy offers, “is that it reminds me so much of my own high school.  We were even EAGLES too!” 

                 A graduate of Jacksonville State University, where she received a B.S. degree in English Education in 1981, Nancy earned her Masters’ degree in the same field from Georgia College and State University .  She taught in the Etowah County, Alabama school system for six years before moving to Georgia in 1987.  She first taught in the Carroll County System at Central High School, from 1987-1993, and also taught classes in Open Campus High School.

                Nancy is an author, and has been published in various magazines, newspapers, and anthologies.  Her books , Earth Calling Heaven, Anybody Home?  And Dance With Me, Lord!—A Celebration of God’s Love are each collections of her essays that she has written over the years. 

                Nancy is married to the Rev. J. Wayne Monroe,  a United Methodist minister.   Because of the appointment system in the Methodist Church, Nancy has lived and taught in a number of locations in the metro area, including Greene County High School, Pope High School in Marietta,  and Shiloh High School in Gwinnett County.

                “It felt so good to come back home to West Georgia, and particularly, to the Carroll County School System,”  Nancy shares.  “What a wonderful place to wind up my teaching career,”  She quickly adds,  “—not that I have any intention of going anywhere soon!  My students invigorate me; they make me laugh, and they challenge me to learn more so that I can teach more.”

                “Mt. Zion is a very special place,” Nancy says.  “I can say that with some authority, having  taught in seven different schools, in five different school systems, in two different states!   The students at Mt. Zion are refreshing, and the staff is simply the best group of colleagues a person could ever wish to spend  her days with.  I’ve been tremendously blessed, through the years, with fabulous people to work with—many who have become my lifelong friends.  But the support system that is in place at Mt. Zion, from our administration to the custodians, is amazing.   It’s a joy.”

                Nancy serves at Mt. Zion’s English Department Chair, and is a senior sponsor.  “I love seniors.  They are on the cusp—one foot in school, one foot out.  I get to be a senior every year—going through their anxieties and anticipations.  It’s exciting to watch them bloom.”  She teaches British Literature, AP Literature, and AP Language and Composition.    She is the sponsor of Mt. Zion’s Chapter of Key Club International.
